North West Regional Group celebrates BWPA 70th anniversary
As a vibrant and active association with a rich history, it seemed fitting for the North West Regional Group to celebrate the BWPA’s 70th anniversary at the similarly historic and active Manchester Barton Aerodrome, the UK’s first municipal airport.
Barton predates the formation of the BWPA by some 25 years, opening in 1930 as Manchester’s main airport. It remains busy with a great on site restaurant, The Club House, where the BWPA members lunched and shared stories and experiences.
Whether it’s breaking world records, sharing training advice, mentoring young aspiring female pilots, or even stories from the Cold War, members have such depth of knowledge and experience that the events are always rewarding.
Claire Hatton, North West Regional Representative, organised everything apart from the weather, though even with a couple of occluded fronts sweeping across the country there was time for a quick group photo outside with the historic, original, Grade II listed control tower.
Following this with a brew and BWPA member Sue’s famous cake in the Pilot’s Lounge meant more opportunities to talk aviation and hang out with the real stars of the day – BWPA dogs Millie and Louie.
Fiona and Angus Macaskill flew in the furthest distance, from Newport City Airfield near Bristol, but as the World Record Holders for the most landings in a day, it didn’t present too much of a challenge.
Another enjoyable and valuable event organised by the North West Regional Group.
