Shared Skies: BWPA Visit to BALPA

 In Events, News

On 10 February, members of the British Women Pilots’ Association (BWPA) had the pleasure of visiting the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) for an insightful and thoroughly enjoyable morning learning more about the work BALPA is doing to support pilots across the industry.

We were warmly welcomed by BALPA’s General Secretary, Amy Leversidge, and Director of Flight Safety, Policy and Regulation, Joji Waites, who opened the session with an overview of BALPA’s wide-ranging work advocating for pilots at every stage of their careers. From training and licensing to operational matters, medical support, accident analysis, sustainability, air traffic management and emerging technologies, BALPA’s network of specialist groups works powerfully behind the scenes. We also learned about their 24/7 helpline—reassuring to know that expert support is always just a phone call away, no matter the hour or altitude!

A key theme of the visit was improving access to pilot training, an issue close to many BWPA members’ hearts. BALPA’s Public Affairs Advisor spoke about ongoing efforts to promote more accessible and sustainable pathways into aviation, including apprenticeship schemes and alternative funding models designed to ease the financial burden of training. Their work with policymakers, particularly those representing constituencies with aviation infrastructure, is helping ensure that the next generation of pilots remains firmly on the national radar.

We also heard from one of BALPA’s female National Officers, whose energising presentation highlighted BALPA’s work to improve conditions and opportunities for flight crew. Among the many initiatives discussed was the successful extension of maternity and parental leave provisions—an important and encouraging step forward. We were also given a glimpse into BALPA’s wide range of courses, webinars and volunteer-led programmes, all designed to support pilots both professionally and personally.

Of course, it wasn’t all serious discussion. BALPA proved wonderful hosts, and their boardroom—overlooking Heathrow’s Runways 09L and 27R—provided a constant temptation. Even the most focused attendees found themselves involuntarily turning their heads to watch aircraft glide past the windows!

The visit brought together a fantastic mix of experience, from seasoned airline pilots and operational professionals to student pilots just beginning their journey—and even a hot air balloon pilot, reminding us that aviation comes in many wonderful forms. The atmosphere was open, enthusiastic and full of shared passion for flying and for supporting one another.

A huge thank you to Lisa Humphries, BWPA South Regional Representative, for organising such a valuable and enjoyable visit, and to all the BWPA volunteers and regional representatives whose dedication continues to create these opportunities for connection, learning and inspiration.
