Members go behind the scenes of the BBMF

The Midlands Region were treated to an exclusive Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) hangar tour at RAF Coningsby last Friday.

The seven members who attended were granted special access through the middle of the hangar; arranged through a BWPA member’s connections. Our wonderful volunteer tour guide Tony had a wealth of knowledge and gave Steph, Julia, Amy, Bev, Jo, Louise and I an up close and personal tour with the incredible aircraft. We were excited to hear about the history of the aircraft and took plenty of photos!

The hangar houses two Chipmunks, several Spitfires and Hurricanes, and the star of the show, the majestic Avro Lancaster PA474. An awesome and inspiring aircraft, which sat proudly at the end of the hangar, it is humbling to see the Lancaster back in action and flying again after being grounded. It brought home the commitment of this incredibly dedicated team who keep these aircraft flying for future generations to enjoy.

The trip around the hangar finished with a visit to the shop, a few purchases and a wander around the small museum with further information about the history of BBMF. It was fantastic to meet up with other BWPA members and get to know them better, to talk about all things aviation, weather and each other’s interests. I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone again soon at future BWPA-arranged tours and visits.
