The pictures show Yvonne Sintes being awarded the British Women Pilots’ association’s Jean Lennox Bird pendant by Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Burridge KCB CBE FRAeS at the Royal Aero Club Annual awards ceremony on 13th May 2014. This award is made to a British woman pilot who has served aviation over a period of time in any aspect, consistently achieving goals, showing diligence to duties and encouragement to others. Yvonne gained her PPL and Assistant Instructor Rating in 1953 and flew continuously until her retirement in 1980 with over 10,000 hours. By then she had achieved a number of ‘first’, including first woman to be trained as an Air traffic Controller in the UK and first female commercial jet captain, a position she achieved on the BAC1-11 with Dan Air in 1965.
