BWPA Spring Scholarships 2018 – applications now open!

We are pleased to announce that applications are open for our 2018 Spring Scholarships and Membership Bursaries. This year we are awarding up to five scholarships and two bursaries. All applications are via email and full details, including eligibility criteria, can be found on the application forms, available for download below.

For the Spring Scholarships, all applicants must be members of the BWPA (full or associate) at the time of application and at selection of winners during May 2018. For the Membership Bursaries, priority will be given to current members, but non-members and those whose membership has expired will be considered. BWPA membership is not restricted to UK citizens or residents.

You may apply for more than one scholarship, provided you satisfy the relevant application criteria for each.

BWPA Air Total Flying Futures Scholarship

Following the very successful round-Britain trip of our 2017 winner, Air Total Aviation Fuels have once again kindly donated £1000 for a scholarship. The award is available for any type of directly engine-powered flying to pilots with at least a first qualification, to provide support towards a particular personal or more unusual flying challenge. Examples might include (but are not restricted to) air racing, a navigation competition, a flight to an unusual destination, or a mountain flying course. If you have an interesting project in mind, please apply!

The award will be made to the female pilot who, in the opinion of the selection panel describes the most realistic, feasible, well planned and interesting project, along with demonstrating a high chance of completing the project. The panel also reserves the right to make no award if no suitable candidate is identified. The panel will include a representative from Air Total Aviation Fuels.

BWPA Dame Margaret Joan Anstee Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is new for this year, and has a value of £500. This had kindly been donated by a BWPA member and her partner. Dame Margaret Joan Anstee was a remarkable person who was passionate about women reaching their full potential in whatever sphere they chose. Although not a pilot, her professional life was spent travelling the world, much of it in aircraft – large, small and occasionally in helicopters. The scholarship is available for a woman looking to gain a qualification in any type of flying in order to further her intention of an aviation-related life and/or career.

BWPA Membership Bursaries

New for this year are two bursaries to cover BWPA memberships for women pilots for the year 2018-2019. They are each worth £40 and will cover BWPA membership for one full year. These have been donated by the BWPA to recognise the efforts of active members who find themselves unable to fund the renewal of their BWPA membership for financial reasons. There is no lower or upper age limit for applicants. Priority will be given to current BWPA members unable to personally find the funding to continue their membership. However, should prospective members or those with expired membership wish to apply, applications will also be considered. Full details are given on the application form.

  • The closing date is Saturday, 31st March 2018.
  • All applications will be treated as confidential.
  • Winners will be notified before the start of the 2018-19 membership year.
  • Winners’ names will not be made public.

We encourage all potential and current women pilots to consider joining the BWPA (if not already a member) and applying for a scholarship; joining the BWPA directly helps to support our scholarship programme now and into the future. BWPA membership is not restricted to UK citizens or residents, although the scholarships will generally be UK based. Applicants may apply for more than one scholarship, provided they satisfy the relevant criteria for each application.
